International Open Access Week

International Open Access Week begins October 20th, and there are many virtual presentations to choose from. Below are seven events SCELC recommends to members of our community interested in this important subject.

Keynote Address: Community Over Commercialization

Dr Danny Kingsley, Deakin Library’s Director, Library Services (Information)

Open Access (OA) Week kicks off with a keynote address from Dr Danny Kingsley, Deakin Library’s Director, Library Services (Information) and internationally recognized champion of and advocate for open access. Dr Kingsley’s keynote will set the scene for OA Week by exploring the open scholarship movement, tracing its evolution, current state and future potential. Dr Kingsley will explore the underlying principles of open scholarship, the diverse approaches taken globally and their impact. This session will also highlight the challenges and barriers to broader adoption, laying the groundwork for Tuesday’s panel discussion and setting the tone for a week of thought-provoking discussion.

Open and Engaged 2024: Empowering Communities to Thrive in Open Scholarship

Several sessions are available throughout the wee hours on Monday, streamed from the UK. The Open and Engaged 2024 conference centers on leveraging the power of communities in the axis of open scholarship, open infrastructure, emerging technologies, collections as data, equity and integrity, skills development and sustainable models to elevate research of all kinds for the public good.

Copyright Confusion: Demystifying Creative Commons Licenses for Industry-Funded Research — International Open Access Week

This webinar will give participants an overview of CC licenses in the context of industry-funded research publications. What are the factors to consider when selecting a CC license? What are the implications of selecting each type of CC license? Case studies will be shared that show the consequences of CC license selections on content reuse.

Karger in Conversation - Open to Interpretation: Translating the Vocabulary of Open Access into Action

Data Cartels and Commercial Obstacles to Open Access

The Penn State University Libraries will participate in the 17th annual global celebration of Open Access Week by hosting Sarah Lamdan, Deputy Director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom and author of Data Cartels. Lamdan has worked on data justice projects across the spectrum from open government to personal privacy. She researches and writes about information access, surveillance and privacy, and informational capitalism.
