SCELC Channel One: Losing, Retaining & Recruiting Staff at SCELC Institutions

We talk quite a bit in C1 about SCELC library staffing; we had our pandemic-inflected session Staffing Shortages at SCELC Institutions back in 2021, and Staffing, Understaffing & Leadership Roles at SCELC Institutions last summer. But those discussions have been framed after the fact, when we're trying to respond well after we've already lost staff. What's come up for me in the community lately is a much more active facet of staffing: when we are smack dab in the middle of staff leaving for other libraries or even leaving libraries period. How do we help our institutions keep our teammates? When we can hire new teammates, how do we equitably recruit them to join? What do we do to ensure that they stay?

This week, I invite the community to an open forum style community check-in to talk about how to deal with this more introspective, proactive aspect of staffing in our libraries. Please join us this week back at our usual timeslot, 10AM Pacific this Friday, 4/21

SCELC Channel One is the virtual hub for our consortial community: a regular but flexible-format group call for SCELCers far and wide. What started in early 2020 as a weekly online COVID-19 pandemic check-in slowly morphed into a monthly standing community discussion group. Topics range from focused webinar content and announcements from SCELC Staff, to guest presentations or even totally free-form watercooler hangouts with your SCELC peers. We keep things as tight or loose as the community needs to be in Channel One.
