SCELC Open Access Week 2019 Webinar: OER Programs at Private Liberal Arts Institutions

The Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium’s (SCELC) Scholarly Communications Committee invites you to spend lunchtime on Monday of Open Access Week (Oct. 21) learning about Open Education Resource (OER) Programs at private liberal arts institutions. Please join this year’s panel of faculty, librarians, and students from Gettysburg College and the University of San Diego to learn about their experiences with OER.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Alecea Standlee specializes in teaching and research in the areas of gender, social theory, sociology of technology, social Inequality.  Her current scholarship examines the social and cultural implications of contemporary interpersonal communication technologies, with a specific interest on the role of socio-economic status, gender and geographic location in the formation of interpersonal relationships and complex social networks. Her publications have made contributions not only to substantive theorizing in culture, technology studies, socialization and inequality, but also to the emerging field of online research methods.  At Gettysburg College, Dr. Standlee teaches courses on social theory and gender, as well as an introductory course for the major.

Janelle Wertzberger is Assistant Dean and Director of Scholarly Communications at Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library. She provides leadership and vision for the scholarly communications program, including open access publishing and open education. She supports the research of undergraduate students and faculty and participates actively in the information literacy instruction program. She is also involved in the design and implementation of library programs and learning series which support the curriculum, encourage critical thinking, and enliven the imagination.

Musselman Library hosted its first program on OER in 2014 and established a Scholarly Communications department in 2015.

Drew Talley is an associate professor in Environmental and Ocean Sciences at the University of San Diego. He teaches a variety of courses including Organisms & Ecosystems, Biological Oceanography, Statistics and Experimental Design, and Graduate Seminar at USD. Professor Talley’s philosophy of teaching parallels his research philosophy – students thrive under a system that is multidisciplinary, allowing them to use traditional classroom-learning methods coupled with field and laboratory work, so that they come to an understanding of a topic from multiple angles. He has also served for almost 20 years as the Science Director for a STEM Education nonprofit, Ocean Discovery Institute.

Alejandra Nann is the Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian at the University of San Diego Copley Library. She manages the procurement, licensing, and management of all electronic resources and serials and is the liaison to Architecture.  She is the chair of Copley Library’s OER committee and is a member of the University’s Textbook Accessibility Task Force. Copley Library launched its OER Initiative in 2015 and faculty receive a $1,000 stipend when they replaced one resource in a course with an OER. A second stipend program began in 2016 for faculty open textbook reviews.
