The New York Times
Offer Abstract:

SCELC is participating in an interconsortial offer that allows academic libraries to provide an Academic Site License to the New York Times web edition. This access is similar to that provided by an individual subscription. This offer was negotiated by the Center for Research Libraries, with SCELC as a consortial partner.  Any SCELC library that is also a CRL member will subscribe to NYT directly through CRL.  CSUs should contact the Chancellor's Office for a quote. This NYT offer covers only higher education academic institutions.

Product Description:

In 2013 The Times publishers introduced an “Academic Site License” to www.nytimes.com for educational institutions.  SCELC library subscriptions will be managed through CRL to allow SCELC Members and affiliates to benefit from the lower price that will result from the greater buying power of an interconsortial offer.

The Academic Site License includes access to NYTimes.com, as well as their smartphone and tablet apps (excluding cooking and crosswords).  It also includes access to The New York Times inEducation website, which provides curricular resources for faculty.  New content is available every week for faculty to utilize in their courses.

The online version of The New York Times launched in 1996, includes not only the same articles, features and images that appear in the print edition, but a wealth of additional still image, video, audio, graphics, data visualizations and much more.  It also includes much of the content of the print edition prior to 1996, as well as a mandarin Chinese edition and Spanish edition.

The complete archive of The New York Times can now be searched from NYTimes.com — more than 13 million articles in total from 1851 to the present day.  Under the academic site license, access to content from 1923 through 1980 is currently limited because of technical constraints and contractual arrangements for electronic distribution. Up to a total of 5 articles from the 1923 - 1980 period can be accessed per user per day for the life of the pass.

Academic institutions can choose from the following access options for user account activation:

  • Academic Pass:  Users activate a new account from the NYTimes.com Access page using their campus email address. Users do not need to be connected to an institutional IP address.

  • Group Pass: Users activate a new account from the NYTimes.com Access page while connected to an institution's on-campus or proxy IP address. Users can register with a campus or personal email address.

Once registered and activated, users can access NYT using web and mobile browsers; tablet and smartphone apps from any location.

  • When the pass period is over, the user will need to re-validate their NYT account and grab a new pass.
