Harvard University Press and SCELC are pleased to offer the Digital Loeb Classical Library & The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE).
The Loeb Classical Library was designed to bring the written treasures of the ancient Greek and Roman world “ within reach of all who care for the finer things in life.” This gold standard of classical study has now been produced online, allowing readers to enjoy its Greek and Latin texts alongside English translations in familiar as well as surprising new ways.
The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE)—representing the full panoply of American regional vocabulary, from Adam’s housecat to Zydeco—has long been consulted by a wide range of scholars and lovers of language and regional nuance. The digital version, available now at daredictionary.com, transforms the dictionary into an interactive, multimedia tool that will greatly benefit both scholarly inquiry and general intellectual curiosity.
The Loeb Classical Library was founded in 1911 by James Loeb as a facing-page translation series intended to make the work of classical authors accessible in high-quality editions to as many readers as possible, regardless of their knowledge of Greek or Latin. Today the series stands alongside Penguin, Harlequin, and very few others as a recognized publishing "brand." The iconic red and green volumes have long been an invaluable resource to scholars, students, and, in Loeb’s words, all those interested in “the beauty and learning, the philosophy and wit of the great writers of ancient Greece and Rome.”
The digital Loeb Classical Library now extends its founding mission with an interconnected, fully searchable, perpetually growing virtual library of all that is important in Greek and Latin literature: epic and lyric poetry; tragedy and comedy; history, travel, philosophy, and oratory; and the great medical writers and mathematicians. Though online databases of Greek and Latin literature have existed for years, the digital Loeb Classical Library is unprecedented in its accessibility and scope: for the first time, readers without knowledge of Greek and Latin will be able to explore a vast range of the classical literary heritage online through high-quality, modern translations.
