SCELC announces the 2010 SCELC Award for First-time Attendance at a Library-related Conference!

SCELC is offering awards for librarians and staff of SCELC member libraries to attend a library-related conference for the first time. To be eligible, applicants must be currently employed at a SCELC member library, and must have never before attended the specific conference for which they are applying. The conference must take place before July 1, 2010.

All application materials must be received at the SCELC office by 5 p.m. on December 9, 2009. Award winners will be notified by December 16, 2009.

See the http://scelc.org/grants for more details.

James Wiser and Rick Burke will be attending the Charleston Conference on behalf of SCELC. SCELC will be prominent in the conference program, participating in three different presentations. Rick will be presenting on “Negotiation” at the Serials Preconference, and moderating a panel entitled “Who’s in the Middle? Library Consortia, Subscription Agents and Book Distributors”. James will be part of panel entitled “It’s the Economy, Stupid: Dealing with High Acquisition Goals in Low Economic Times”.

Because of its informal nature, the Charleston Conference is also one of our best opportunities to meet with vendors and discuss issues with both publishers and librarians in a collegial atmosphere.

James and Rick will not be the only SCELC presence at the conference, either. A number of SCELC Member Libraries will also be represented, including: Claremont University Consortium, Getty Research Institute, Loyola Marymount University, and University of Southern California. If you or someone from your library is attending, let us know and be sure to say hello!

We are excited to announce the addition of Donna LaFollette to the SCELC administrative staff. Donna joins SCELC as our new business manager. As many of you know, Steven Morris, SCELC’s Business Manager since 2001, is leaving his position at the end of December to attend rabbinical school. Until the end of December, Steven and Donna will be working side-by-side as Steven brings Donna up to speed on managing the finances of SCELC.

Donna is a native of Southern California, and most recently was the Accounting & Receiving Supervisor for the libraries at Cal State Northridge. Donna brings nearly 25 years of academic library experience to SCELC, and while she completed her library degree she interned at UCLA-Olive View Medical Center, where she continues to serve as a volunteer. She received her BA in Russian Civilization from UCLA and her MLIS from the University of Illinois.

Donna’s email address is and until January 1 can be contacted at the SCELC main phone line at (310) 728-6791. After January 1, she will take over Steven’s phone extension at (310) 728-6792.

Please join us in welcoming Donna to the SCELC staff.

You may notice some changes on the SCELC website. We've upgraded the underlying architecture so that we can continue to roll out new features that give our members more access to information they want and need. If you find any errors or have any problems, please contact Tommy Keswick by email or with the contact form.

Thanks for bearing with us if there are bumps in the road.
