Internet Librarian 2008 discounts available for members

Once again SCELC has obtained discounted registration for the Internet Librarian 2008 conference. SCELC members may now register through SCELC’s registration form, available here. This year's program, held from October 20–22 in Monterey, is now online at: http://www.infotoday.com/IL2008/overview.asp.

Please note: discounts apply only to the actual conference registration, not any pre-conferences. The SCELC discounted rate for the conference is $275.

Here’s a brief summary of this year’s conference theme:

This year’s conference theme, Beyond 2.0: User-Focused Tools & Practices, highlights how Web 2.0 tools and practices, web services, social media, and new platforms of social computing are enabling libraries and information professionals to interact with their clients and communities in new and exciting ways. New tools and processes have ignited creative integrated content mashups, specialized and personalized services for community segments, and exciting new techniques for dealing with voluminous information flows, including user-generated content.

Internet Librarian 2008 provides attendees with many chances to meet and hear from leading edge information professionals in all types of environments—leaders in the information industry who are integrating content and delighting their clients, organizing and managing digital content in creative ways, setting the context for excellence in information utilization in their organizations, revolutionizing the roles of info pros, building strong collaborative communities among their customers and colleagues, and using new technologies in creative and exciting ways.

To take advantage of the SCELC discount, please follow this procedure:

If you are paying by credit card, fill out and fax back the attached SCELC registration form with your payment. Fax it to 310-471-0123.

If you are paying by check, mail the SCELC registration form with your check to the SCELC office. Make checks payable to "Information Today" and mail your check and reg form to:

SCELC
Attn: Internet Librarian Registration
15600 Mulholland Dr, Taper 101
Los Angeles, CA 90077-1519

Payments are due on September 16, 2008.

The SCELC office will submit to Information Today the payments for all SCELC registrations received by September 16. Information Today pays SCELC $8 for every registration we submit, so there's a small perk for SCELC if you register through our offices!

IF YOU MISS THE SEPTEMBER 16 DEADLINE:

....You will still be able to register directly with Information Today and obtain the SCELC discount! Be sure to use the SCELC registration form. However, post-September 16 registrations must be sent directly to Information Today at their address on the bottom of the registration form, NOT to our office. SCELC will not receive any credit for those registrations.

How to do an Overlap Analysis in Serials Solutions Client Center

I've had a number of questions from members about the Overlap Analysis tool offered by Serials Solutions that members have access to through SCELC. The tool can be a great help in determining which databases are giving the most value (in terms of unique journals) for the money.

After clicking on Overlap Analysis on the Client Center Home Page you will be shown a list of all the databases that SCELC offers.

From here you have a number of options depending on which databases you want to compare. The buttons in the gray title bar allow for the different actions.

Reset will bring the list of SCECL databases back to the initial state at any point in your session.

Add will give you a screen where you can add any additional databases that Serials Solutions tracks to the list for comparison.

Remove will bring you to a screen where you can check off which databases to exclude from the comparison.

Run Analysis will execute the Overlap Analysis and include all the databases that are currently showing in the list.

Now for a working example.

Let’s say your institution wants to compare two databases. You’ll need to click the Remove button to go to the Remove page. Then de-select (uncheck) the databases you do not want to compare, or de-select (uncheck) everything to just make your selections on the Add page, depending on the method you want to use.

Once you’ve checked off the databases you don’t want and clicked the Remove button you'll be able to use the Add button to search for databases that you would actually like to compare. You can search by database title or get a list of databases from specific providers. On the list that shows up, select the databases you would like to add to your comparison list and click the Add button.

Then your list should appear with only the databases you want to compare. At this point click Run Analysis and the tool will begin working.

In order to understand your results, it is important to understand what all the numbers mean. Serials Solutions provides this key:

Title Unique: Journals available in only one of your databases.

Holding Unique: Journals available in more than one database, but without overlapping coverage dates.

Total Unique: The sum of “Title Unique” and “Holding Unique” holdings.

Full Holding Overlap: Journals available in more than one database. The coverage dates of the reference holdings are completely overlapped by at least one comparison holding.

Partial Holding Overlap: Journals available in more than one database. The coverage dates of the reference holdings are only partly overlapped by at least one comparison holding.

Total Holding Overlap: The sum of “Full Overlap” and “Partial Overlap” holdings.

Title Overlap: Journals with overlap, but lacking enough information to define the overlap as “full” or “partial.”

Total: The sum of “Total Unique” and “Total Overlap” holdings.

Percent Full Overlap: Percentage of all holdings in a database that are completely overlapped by at least one other holding from another database.

Percent Unique: Percentage of all holdings in a database that are either title unique or holding unique.

While there is no export function for this data, with your mouse, you can click and drag to select all of it and then copy and paste it into a spreadsheet for further use.

One important fact to keep in mind for anybody considering the Thomson Gale product Educator's Reference Complete is entirely contained within Thomson Gale's Academic OneFile. So, if your library's reference department is considering purchase of Academic OneFile, there may be no need to purchase Educator's Reference Complete.
